Project Goal: To empower the vulnerable community of Mandera County to adapt to the effects of climate change through improved livelihoods, food security and a better CC/ENRM policy.

Target Population: 23,000 people from poor and vulnerable rural communities  

Project Areas: Damasa, Neboi and Darika villages in Lafey and Mandera East

Project Specific Objectives:

1)      To increase community resilience to the effects of climate change (cc)

2)      To improve the ENRM policy environment in Mandera County for climate change adaptation

Key Activities:

1)      To increase community resilience to the effects of climate change (cc) by;

  • Capacity building communities on CC adaptation measures through
    • Training of 40 farmers on sustainable farming and ENRM
    • Training 40 farmers on bee keeping
    • Training 15 opinion leaders on disaster risk reduction
  •  Promotion of diversification of livelihoods
    • Procurement and installation of 200 beehives
  • Promotion of conservation of riverine vegetation
    • Establish 2 tree nurseries
    • Plant at least 2000 trees along the riverine
  • Promotion and advocacy for the adoption of renewable energy technologies
    • Install 1 solar powered borehole water pump to serve about 1200 households and over 100,000 livestock

2)      To improve the ENRM policy environment in Mandera County for climate change adaptation through advocacy by;

  • Facilitating advocacy, lobbying and networking meetings on ENRM issues
    • Conduct at least 2 lobbying and knowledge sharing meetings
    • Facilitate quarterly (4) ENRM network  meetings
    • Conduct bimonthly dialogue meetings at the village level with different community groups
    • Participate in at least 4 district steering committee meetings
  • Raising public awareness on climate change through mass media (radio, IEC materials)
    • Facilitate 8 weekly radio mentions or spots on climate change issues
    • Design, print and distribute 1000 brochures on climate change issues
    • Design, print and distribute 5000 brochures on climate change issues

Expected results

1)      Increased public awareness and knowledge on climate change causes, effects, and adaptations and wise use of natural resources

2)      Active CC/ENRM networks, coalitions and/or advocacy groups

3)      Improved livelihoods and food security

4)      Enhanced conservation and better benefits from local natural resources

5)      Proactive and informed engagement of the community, MCAs and NSA in formulation of CC/ENRM policies at county and village levels.
