Working towards a just society

The emergency education in Gedo region has been greatly affected by the recent conflict between the government forces and anti-government elements and the current prevailing drought which has resulted into famine in some parts of southern Somalia.  Extreme poverty, severe food shortages at household level leading to hunger has caused many people to migrate to different directions in search of food. New settlements of IDPs have sprung up in many places. The effect of the population movements on the education sector has been devastating. The existing schools are faced with massive drop outs of students leading to closure of some schools due to lack of children and teachers. Furthermore, the newly established IDPs are located in remote areas and have no services of any kind.
This project proposal is aimed at addressing education needs of 3,639 children (1,597 girls) affected by the prolonged conflict and drought emergency in Dollow and Belet-Hawa districts of north Gedo region by providing access to quality education through the provision of child friendly learning spaces; provision of essential teaching and learning materials; improving the  teaching capacity of teachers through training, and motivating them through provision of regular monthly incentives; and strengthening the capacity of community education committees through training on school management and emergency response during crisis situations.
NAPAD is a new partner to UNICEF in implementation of education programmes. However, NAPAD has been a partner to NCA on UNICEF-funded education programmes in Gedo region since 2006. Through the support of NCA with funding from UNICEF, NAPAD was running 8 schools in Dollow and Belet-Hawa districts. NAPAD works in close collaboration with NCA, education cluster members in Gedo and Community Education Committees at school levels.  It is against this background that NAPAD proposes to:
1.    Construct 10 new semi-permanent classrooms and rehabilitate 9 permanent classrooms.
2.    Train 112 CEC members of whom 32 are female from 16 schools on school management and administration, education in emergency preparedness and response planning and psychosocial support.
3.    Distribute essential teaching and learning materials including school and pupil kits and textbooks to 16 emergency affected schools for 3,639 children, 1,597 girls in Dollow and Belet-Hawa districts.
4.    Provide regular monthly incentives to 90 primary school teachers from 16 schools
5.    Training of 90 teachers of whom 18 are female on consolidated training package including psychosocial support, minimum standards of education in emergency and pedagogic skills.
6.    Provide onsite technical support through supervision and monitoring of education activities in 16 target schools.
